When we were first approached for the job we were a little apprehensive, having seen the drawings and take off's we quickly realised we would have a logistical nightmare in the development of this project, from the kerbside to the rear of the garden there was a height of 2.6m, negotiating 8 steps from the road to the front garden and then a further 5 steps staggered over 40metres, with an incline to boot, there was no access for machinery so a hand excavation and various backfills, this was going to be a tough job!
Tom and Kerry's house is a C listed building which was built for the Earl of Eglinton back in the Early Georgian period (circa 1800), we had a special project on our hands and we were looking to get to the end of the project with a high specification completion, integrated into the fabric was a system which would enable the Velux windows, projector system and lightning system to be worked and controlled from an ipad. This was achieved with a close liaison with Tom and the appointed electrical engineer. we used a great variety of materials from cedar wood to limestone from South Korea, and solar powered Velux windows with shutters, an oak bi-fold door system and an incorporation of a fanlight in the breakfasting area, an idea mooted was to use a glass baluster at the split level which would enable the rooms to have a flow through feel, I think we achieved this.
The finished project has been a source of great pride and achievement one which would not have been possible without Tom and Kerry.
We worked with our appointed Architect to translate our ideas into paper, and although this was a very positive experience we realised that an Architect will only come up with the concept. What was unclear was the physical translation of these plans which incorporated a lot of influences from a warm climate, into something which we can still enjoy in the temperate climate of Western Scotland.
Our builder (Martin and Son) was appointed on a personal recommendation which was a big positive for us what with the Project being non standard.
The extension consisted of a Breakfast Room, a bespoke Cinema Room and and Outdoor / Indoor Room, as well as connection of said extension to a C listed period property.
Throughout the Design and Build process Martin Sneddon and his staff engaged with us during every step and we evolved into an informal Project team, working together on detail and finishes, as well as schedule and costs. This whole process was effortless and worked extremely well.
As there were a number of unique elements associated with this build Martin and his employees had to tie all the various trades, some of which we appointed ourselves for specialist tasks, such as Cinema Room fit out and automation, together.
The end result has been beyond our expectations. With Martins guidance we have implemented cutting edge elements into our build which we would never have considered, which enables us to utilise our rooms to their full advantage, while being considerate to the fact that this was an extension to a listed building in a conservation area.
I would not hesitate to recommend Martin & Son to anyone who is considering any type of building work. You cannot put a price on integrity and honesty and these are two mannerisms everyone associated with this company display in great amounts.”
